One of the most remarkable monuments of history is located some 16 km east of Shoumen (pic.1). A bas-relief of a man of actual size on horseback piercing a lion with his spear is chiseled into the vertical rock 25 metres above ground. He is followed by a dog. The inscriptions around the composition relate it to the time of the Bulgarian Khans Tervel, Kormisosh and Omourtag, (8th-9th century). This monument is unique in Europe and for this reason it was included in the UNESCO list of world cultural monuments.
The locality around the Madara Horseman is immersed in mystery and mysticism. Here used to be the main sacred place of worship of the ancient from the First Bulgarian Kingdom.
