One of the most remarkable monuments of history is located some 16 km east of Shoumen (pic.1). A bas-relief of a man of actual size on horseback piercing a lion with his spear is chiseled into the vertical rock 25 metres above ground. He is followed by a dog. The inscriptions around the composition relate it to the time of the Bulgarian Khans Tervel, Kormisosh and Omourtag, (8th-9th century). This monument is unique in Europe and for this reason it was included in the UNESCO list of world cultural monuments.
